Craco – Italy
Since 540, Craco has been comfortably located on top of a mountain in Italy. In fact, it was a thriving city for 1400 years! It was in full force until 1972, when citizens abandoned it.
There were some reasons why Craco became unsustainable. The main cause of its fall was an unfortunate rock fall in 1963, from which the citizens never recovered.
Temple of Santiago – Mexico
This abandoned Roman Catholic Church opened its doors in 1564. Originally, it accommodated the entire congregation and was even prepared for the planned population growth in neighboring regions.
Unfortunately, the city was affected by a smallpox epidemic in 1773-1776 and all eventually died. Since the construction of the Malpaso dam, it occasionally suffers flooding (as seen in the photo).
